Portland
Voodoo Doughnuts
While in Portland, Oregon, we (very excitedly) made our way to Voodoo Doughnuts. It is another restaurant that was featured on the Travel Channels Man V. Food, and it was one that Skyler was super excited to check out! I’m not the hugest doughnut fan, but Skyler LOVES them! And I must admit, the show definitely makes you want to try all of the different funky flavors!
As I briefly mentioned the other day, it rained during most of our trip up north. Insight into our next few months?! Probably! But it was raining pretty hard by that afternoon when we were ready to find Voodoo Doughnuts. The roads downtown Portland were a bit reminiscent of those in San Francisco…crappy to navigate as a newbie! And parking downtown, even on a weekday seemed nearly impossible.
After driving in circles for over 30 minutes, we finally found a parking garage that was a few blocks away from where the doughnut shop was supposed to be. So we parked and decided to go exploring in the rain…I mean we weren’t going to melt right?! Ha! So we finally found where the store was supposed to be and guess what?! It was temporarily closed for renovations!!! There was a sign on the door with an address to their second location. So we paid for parking and got soaking wet for no real reason. But hey, we got to explore Portland right?!
While we were wandering around the city lost, we stumbled across a couple of streets that were lined with food trucks. We had thought it would be so fun to grab lunch after we got the doughnuts. But by the time we had walked around in the rain for a while we decided that eating lunch in the rain didn’t sound so appealing. But check ‘em out…pretty cool to have that many options in good ole food trucks/stands!
The Shrimp Shack was my favorite…
Anyway, we took a rain check (literally) on the food trucks and made our way back to the car and navigated ourselves straight to the next Voodoo Doughnut location. Thank goodness this one had parking! So as you arrive you are immediately greeted by this Pepto pink ugly ass building…just a little sneak peak into the awesomeness that makes up their one-of-a-kind funky theme.
Upon entering the building, you are smacked in the face with the most delicious sweet aroma of fresh doughnuts and icing! Yummm! And…a long line! Again, it was the middle of the afternoon on a Thursday and we still waited in line a good 30 minutes for doughnuts! Crazy right?! But they are THAT good! And trust me, you have plenty of stuff to look at while you are waiting…
A bit eclectic huh?! So we ended up ordering a good hodge-podge of doughnuts that looked delicious and extremely wrong, including:
- Voodoo Doll: Their Signature Doughnut – Raised Yeast Doughnut filled with Raspberry Jelly topped with Chocolate Frosting (and an Icing painted face) & a Pretzel Stick Stabbing it in the chest
- Bacon Maple Bar: Raised Yeast Doughnut with Maple Frosting & Bacon on top
- Marshall Matters: Plain Cake Doughnut with Vanilla Frosting & Mini M&M’s (Best cake doughnut ever – my favorite!)
- Memphis Maphia: Fried Dough with Banana Chunks & Cinnamon Sugar covered in a Glaze with Chocolate Frosting, Peanut Butter, Peanuts, & Chocolate Chips on top (GINORMOUS…and oh so heavenly!)
- Old Dirty Bastard: Raised Yeast Doughnut with Chocolate Frosting, Oreo’s, & Peanut Butter
- Apple Fritter: Fried Dough with Apple Chunks & Cinnamon Sugar covered in a Glaze
So are you envious or do you have a stomach ache just looking at them? haha! Like I said earlier, I am not a huge doughnut fan. I enjoy the occasional warm Krispy Kreme like twice a year, but that’s about it. These doughnuts though are A-MAZ-ING! Fun, crazy theme aside, the flavor is just incredible! They are, as you can imagine, SUPER rich and sweet. So I just had a bite of each and then let Sky dig in. He did his damage and we still had tons of doughnuts left over that we munched on over the course of the next few days before we threw the remains out. Definitely worth the trip!
